What is Thunderbolt 4?

Thunderbolt™ technology is a cable connection interface developed by Intel over the past decade.

Features:

Thunderbolt™ ports provide high bandwidth to connect high speed devices.

Thunderbolt™ cables help ensure a high quality connection between your device and your computer.

Thunderbolt™ accessories easily extend your computer's capabilities with docking options and peripherals.

Advantages of Thunderbolt 4

While all ports serve the basic purpose of connecting input or output devices to computers, Thunderbolt 4 ports have multiple significant advantages.

Flexibility

There are ports that power your device, ports that transfer data from your device to your computer, and ports that transfer video signals from your computer to an external monitor. Thunderboltports do all three things. It provides high speed data transmission, outputs video signals, and can simultaneously power compatible devices (including charging lightweight laptops).

Bandwidth

The Thunderbolt 4 port has 40 Gbps (gigabits per second) of two way bandwidth. This means data can be quickly moved in and out of external storage, and up to five Thunderbolt devices can be connected for flexible device configuration all with one port.

Multifunctional connectivity

The Thunderbolt 4 port is compatible with many connectivity standards, including  Thunderbolt, USB, display port, and earlier versions of PCLE. These ports are compatible with standard USB C connectors.

What connections Thunderbolt 4 can make

So what connections can you make with Thunderbolt 4?

Thunderbolt equipment

Connect Thunderboltdevices, including docking ports, displays, storage devices, and video capture devices.Thunderbolt3 devices and cables are compatible with Thunderbolt 4 ports. Older Thunderbolt devices also work fine, but require an adapter.

External display

Connect multiple monitors. One Thunderbolt 4 port connects up to two 4K 60Hz display port or HDMI monitors via a compatible docking dock or adapter. You can also connect directly to a Thunderbolt specified display.

Storage

Connect to an external high speed Thunderboltsolid state drive to expand the system's storage capacity and keep pace with the built-in drive.

USB peripherals

Connect USB devices such as mouse, keyboard, controller and headset to play games.

PCI Express (PCLE) devices

Use the PCLE extension chassis to access compatible PCLE devices, such as video capture devices for live games.

Connected to the Internet

Connect to high speed 10 GB Ethernet via an adapter, or connect 2 computers over peer-to-peer using Thunderbolt cables. This allows large amounts of data to be transferred from one computer to another, which is ideal for upgrading to a new system.

Charging

Connect your phone, lightweight laptop (less than 100 W), and other compatible USB devices for quick charging.

If you want to connect more devices at once, you can also look at the USB hub for your diverse needs.
